STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE
Title: CONVERTING UNMOUNTED DOUBLESPACE DISKS
(Applies to Stacker for Windows & DOS 3.1)
STAC FAX 31602 (6/93)
_______________________________________________________________
BACKGROUND
Before installing Stacker, make sure all DoubleSpace drives
on your computer are mounted. Stacker automatically converts
DoubleSpace drives if they are mounted. Once you have
installed Stacker, you won't be able to access data on any
unmounted DoubleSpace drives unless you convert them to
Stacker drives.
The following procedure assumes you've already installed
Stacker.
SOLUTION
For this example, let's assume that Drive E is an unmounted
DoubleSpace drive. In the conversion procedure, you will
check the drive for any pre-existing problems, run a program
called DCONVERT to convert the drive, and then mount the new
Stacker drive.
NOTE:
Because it is not yet a Stacker drive, Drive
E does not appear in Stacker's drive map.
Check the drive for any pre-existing conditions
1. If you are in Windows, please exit to DOS. The
procedure works only under DOS.
2. Check the drive for any pre-existing problems. At the
DOS prompt, type:
CHKDSK E: <Enter>
Let the DOS CHKDSK utility fix any problems it finds.
Check the drive for any pre-existing conditions
1. Find the name of the compressed volume file by typing:
DIR E: /AH <Enter>
2. Look for a filename such as DBLSPACE.000. Note the
name to use in the next step.

3. Type:
DCONVERT /C E:\DBLSPACE.000 <Enter>
where DBLSPACE.000 is the unmounted drive to be
converted to a Stacker drive.
IMPORTANT!
DO NOT INTERRUPT THE CONVERSION PROCESS!
If you do not let DCONVERT finish, you
may lose data.
Mount the new Stacker drive
DCONVERT converts the drive into a Stacker drive. The name
of Stacker's "volume file" is STACVOL.DSK. After you
convert your drive, you must mount it again to gain access
to your data. You do this by editing a file called
STACKER.INI.
1. At the DOS prompt, type:
STACINI x: <Enter>
where "x" is the uncompressed boot drive. The
STACKER.INI file will be displayed.
2. At the end of the file, type the following line:
E:\STACVOL.DSK,SW
The SW tells Stacker to swap the drive letters
automatically so everything is where you expect it to
be.
3. Save the change and exit to DOS.
4. Restart your computer.
Stacker mounts the newly converted drive plus any
other mounted drives.
TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF STACKER'S SAFETY
Stacker Optimizer can recompress your data safely, giving you
double the disk capacity without the DoubleSpace risks.
